Filmmaker Andy Muschietti has confirmed that filming has officially begun on “Welcome to Derry,” the upcoming prequel series to his two-film adaptation of Stephen King’s “IT”.
The director, who also helmed next month’s “The Flash” movie for Warner Bros. Pictures, showcased a photo of a windowed door with the name ‘Clint Bowers: Chief of Police’ painted on the glass. What looks like a small office can be seen blurred behind it.
The surname Bowers is familiar, suggesting he’s related to the bully Henry Bowers played by Nicholas Hamilton in the first film and Teach Grant in the second. He’s not Henry’s father though as that character, Oscar Bowers, who was previously played by Stuart Hughes. Oscar would be about late 20s in this period. Quite possibly is Clint is Oscar’s father.
The ten-episode series will reportedly unfold in the eponymous Maine town, bordering an Air Force base with a mysterious ‘Special Projects’ bunker, in the early 1960s.
In the series, four friends set out in search of a friend of theirs who disappeared mysteriously. The series will also go more into the origins of Pennywise the Clown.
Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Stephen Rider, and James Remar will all star in the series. Pennywise operates on a twenty-seven-year cycle between appearances, meaning this will cover the cycle before the one with the kids in the first “IT” film in late 1988/1989.
Muschietti, who directed both films, will serve as executive producer for the series alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. All three developed the story for the show, with Fuchs writing the script and Andy Muschietti will direct multiple episodes of the series, including the first episode.
Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane will serve as co-showrunners on the project which is being produced for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television. Filming is expected to continue through to December.
