Fifth “Indiana Jones” Tracking For $60M Debut

Lucasfilm

Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” arrived on early box-office tracking projections today, with the film currently on course for a $60+ million domestic opening.

That three-day haul is considerably down from the $100.1M opening weekend of the prior film – 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”. That film opened on the Thursday of a Memorial Day weekend and earned $151.9 million over a five-day period.

‘Dial of Destiny’ had a lavish world premiere in Cannes, but the event resulted in lacklustre reviews, with the film charting at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes – those reviews haven’t helped.

With Independence Day falling on a Tuesday, the movie’s opening on the Friday before on June 30th should theoretically help it over the five-day period.

The film is reportedly tracking very well with older guys but not so well with younger ones – drawing comparisons to “No Time to Die” ($55.2 million) and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” ($61.2 million).

Disney reportedly needs to get more interest from that younger demographic who are currently distracted by “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “The Flash”.

James Mangold helms the new film, which is expected to serve as the franchise’s swan song.
