“Father Mother Sister Brother” Wins Venice Fest

The Venice Film Festival has handed out its top prize of Golden Lion for best film to Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother”.

Also scoring major honors were Benny Safdie who won The Silver Lion for best director for the Dwayne Johnson-led “The Smashing Machine,” and Kaouther Ben Hania’s Gaza drama “The Voice of Hind Rajab” took the Grand Jury Prize.

Acting honors went to Toni Servillo in “La Grazia” for Best Actor, Xin Zhilei in “The Sun Rises On Us All” for Best Actress, and Luna Welder in “Silent Friend” for Best Young Actor.

A Special Jury Prize went to Gianfranco Rosi’s Vesuvius documentary “Below the Clouds,” Valérie Donzelli and Gilles Marchand won best screenplay for their work on “At Work,” Maryam Touzani’s “Calle Malaga” took the audience award, while David Pablos’ “On the Road” took the top Horizons section award.

Notably absent were some of the bigger titles of the fest which scored very strong ratings including Kathryn Bigelow’s “A House of Dynamite,” Mona Fastvold’s “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” Francois Ozon’s “The Stranger,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia”.

Other notable titles to screen included Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” Oliver Assayas’ “The Wizard of the Kremlin” and László Nemes’ “Orphan”.
