“Fast & Furious” Spin-Offs Must Wait

Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures’ “Fast & Furious” franchise has so far only yielded one spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw”. According to franchise star/producer Vin Diesel, we can expect that list to grow – but not any time soon.

Speaking to Variety at a recent charity event, Diesel confirmed a spin-off movie centered on the franchise’s female characters is in the works.

However, it and other spin-offs won’t be moving forward until after the main series concludes. Diesel says: “I started developing the female spinoff… in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs.”

Talk of a female-led “Fast & Furious” spin-off movie has been swirling for years, and back in 2019 indicated that writers Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Roberston-Dworet were involved.

Whether any of them remain attached is unclear. “Fast X” debuted last Friday, and the original plan was for it to be the first of a two-parter with the eleventh film to close out the main series in 2025.

However Diesel shook up that belief with comments at the film’s premiere suggesting Universal had asked him to extend the two-part finale into a three-part one which would suggest a twelfth film coming in 2027 at the earliest.

That would mean we won’t be seeing any ‘Fast’ spin-offs until the end of the decade.
