Fans Push For “Picard” Spin-Off “Legacy”

Paramount+

Whilst Paramount is making it clear in the marketing materials that the current third season of “Picard” will be the last of that show, that doesn’t mean it’s the end for either the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” crew or the new season’s characters.

The past few days have seen the rise of the social media hashtag #StarTrekLegacy calling for a potential “Picard” spinoff series utilising characters from the current season.

The spin-off could include the La Forge sisters, Jack Crusher, Seven of Nine, and whomever of the TNG crew who wants back. Now some of the show’s actors and Matalas himself have spoken more about it.

Appearing on “The View,” Levar Burton (who plays Geordi La Forge) and Mica Burton (who plays Alandra La Forge) spoke with host and “Star Trek” veteran Whoopi Goldberg about the idea which they are supportive of. Levar Burton said:

“What the writers have done is they have really set it up well. You have got the next generation of The Next Generation. The La Forge sisters, one’s an engineer, the other’s a pilot. We’ve got Jack Crusher, Seven of Nine. It makes a whole lot of sense.”

Matalas responded to that clip with the tweet “Whoa”. Then veteran Trek designer Mike Okuda got in on the discussion, saying Paramount+ will pay attention to people who subscribe and watch “Picard”.

Matalas also pointed out that “Star Trek: Legacy” is what he’d call a “Picard” spin-off, saying it would be “a 25th Century show that explores the Last Generation and the Next.” Actress Jeri Ryan, who plays Seven of Nine, is seemingly in and shared a petition at Change.org calling for the spin-off. That petition is already at over 11,000 signatures.

The last time a fan push for a new ‘Trek’ spin-off took place was in 2019 when then the successful inclusion of Captain Pike, Spock, and Number One on the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery” was so well-received it led to calls for those characters to get their own series.

Three years later, they did as “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” aired its first season and quickly became the most acclaimed run of the new era of “Star Trek” outside of the current third season of “Picard”.

Could a similar thing happen here? After a flood of “Star Trek” content in recent years, the franchise is about to contract a bit with “Picard” ending shortly and “Star Trek: Discovery” getting a fifth and final season early next year. Further rumored spin-offs like “Section 31” and “Starfleet Academy” seem to have stalled.

“Picard” just aired its third season’s sixth episode which is the point up to which media and reviewers have seen the series. With four episodes remaining, everyone’s now in the dark about what’s to come and all are hoping the season can stick the landing in a way the previous two seasons failed to do so.
