Universal Pictures’ film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Cats” came and went and generated a lot of discussion along the way. From the shock and terror with that first trailer, to the film itself disastrously bombing with critics and at the box-office, there was no escaping the talk of “Cats” even as few actually saw it.
The film also famously saw an ‘updated version’ arrive in cinemas after some incomplete visual effects were spotted by audiences. Yesterday though, the film came back into the zeitgeist when Twitter user Jack Waz outlined a story that led to the creation of the hashtag #ReleasetheButtholeCut
That story? “A VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November to finish some of the 400 effects shots in Cats. His entire job was to remove CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before. Which means that, somewhere out there, there exists a butthole cut of Cats.”
The #ReleaseTheButtholeCut hashtag began trending with numerous people from Rian Johnson to Seth Rogen weighing in asking Universal to do this and bring levity to a world in desperate need of it right now. The regular cut of the film is now available on Digital HD and will be available for rent on April 7th.
