Oscar-winning singer and actor Irene Cara, who sang the memorable theme songs for 1980s decade-defining films “Flashdance” and “Fame,” has died at the age of 63.
Her publicist, Judith A. Moose, announced the news on Twitter and says that the cause of death is “currently unknown”. Cara’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief.
Cara rose to fame playing Coco Hernandez, a student with ambitions of becoming a star in “Fame” for which she also recorded the film’s title song. That song won the Oscar for Best Original Song, whilst Cara’s solo number from the film, “Out Here on My Own,” also scored a nomination.
Cara went on to score an even bigger hit with the song “Flashdance… What a Feeling” for the 1983 romantic drama and box-office hit “Flashdance” about a dancer who dreams of being a ballerina.
Said song again won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Cara also starred in films like “City Heat” alongside Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood, and “Certain Fury” with Tatum O’Neal.
