Less than a week after it premiered and Netflix’s “Extraction 2” has been a major hit for the streamer.
According to the latest data released by the streamer itself, the Chris Hemsworth-led action film had the biggest “opening weekend” of any movie on the service in 2023 – overtaking the Jennifer Lopez-starring “The Mother” for the top slot.
Hemsworth returns as Australian black ops mercenary Tyler Rake who is tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.
Going by the service’s new metrics that divide hours viewed by runtime, the film was watched over 42.8 million times in its first three days of release – equating to 88 million hours watched.
That’s higher than “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, which premiered with 82.14 million hours in its first three days, and on par with “The Gray Man,” which premiered with 88.55 million hours in July last year.
The release also saw demand for the first “Extraction” skyrocket, with the original watched 9.6 million times over the same three-day time frame last week.
Whilst reviews for the film have been mostly quite good, one scene that has drawn a lot of chatter sees Rake opening a door on a moving train to come face to face with a helicopter firing a hail of bullets at him. So, he takes cover behind a ladder which seems to work effectively as a shield despite all the empty space between the rungs. This has led to ‘Extraction 2 Ladder’ becoming an amusingly discussed topic on social media.
Over the weekend at their Tudum fan event in Brazil, Hemsworth confirmed that they’re already developing an “Extraction 3”.
