“Expendables 4” Flops At Dire Box-Office

Lionsgate

In what’s set to be the worst weekend for theatrical ticket sales this year, the fourth “Expendables” movie is set to pull in $8.3 million in its opening weekend – the worst opening for the franchise.

In fact, it will be bested by the third weekend of “The Nun II” which is looking to come in just ahead with $8.4 million. That movie has crossed the $200 million mark globally this weekend with a $204 million total from a $38 million budget.

“Expend4bles” will be helped by international where the film performs stronger. Even so, its debut global weekend is looking to be around $19.1 million – not good for a film with a $100 million production budget.

Kenneth Branagh’s “A Haunting in Venice” will take in $6.3 million in its second weekend domestically, with a total worldwide haul at $71 million so far. “The Equalizer 3” will come in fourth with $4.7 million and “Barbie” fifth with $3.2 million.

Sony’s “Dumb Money” took in $2.5 million in limited release this weekend ahead of its widest release next week. The remastered Talking Heads concert film from 1984, “Stop Making Sense,” is set to gross $800,673 from 264 Imax screens in North America.

The Bollywood blockbuster “Jawan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, has pulled in $13 million so far and is on track to surpass the $14 million domestic box office total of last year’s “RRR”. It’s being seen as having the potential to surpass the highest-grossing Indian movie at the U.S. domestic box office – “Pathaan” at $17 million.

The results cap off what is looking to be the lowest overall box-office weekend of the year with no film earning above $10 million. All eyes are on the AMPTP and WGA as everyone awaits a potential deal that will end one of the strikes.
