Earlier in the week Millenium Media and Lionsgate’s fourth film in “The Expendables” franchise was projected to debut at a franchise low of $15 million for the three-day weekend.
Now the first numbers are in and it looks like it’s going to be considerably lower. Deadline reports that the film is headed towards a $3.3 million haul on Friday. That’s nearly half almost $6 million the third film pulled in back in 2014.
It also means the film is on track to come in below expectations with just $8-10 million for the weekend. Not helping has been the poor critical and social media response with the movie pulling in just a 17% (3.7/10) on Rotten Tomatoes.
In fact, the box-office overall across all films, which last weekend was the second worst of 2023 at just $62.8 million, could potentially go lower this weekend.
Second place will likely go to “The Nun II” which snagged $2.2 million Friday and aims for a third weekend of $7.4 million. Kenneth Branagh’s “A Haunting in Venice” will likely be third following a $1.85 million haul on Friday and a likely second weekend of $5.8 million – a drop of 59%.
“The Equalizer 3” and “Barbie” will round out the Top 5 with $4.5 million and $3.5 million respectively.
