At the end of a recent Deadline article came a comment that Morgan Creek Entertainment Group was working on several reboots including the already announced “Stay Tuned” series at AMC, and a “planned theatrical reboot of The Exorcist in the works for 2021”.
FOX did a TV series version of the property back in 2016 & 2017, but until now there has been no chatter whatsoever about a potential film remake or reboot, let alone one to be fast tracked to be ready in time for a 2021 release.
Morgan Creek famously tweeted back in 2016 they “would never remake The Exorcist” for film, and there’s no listings for a new “Exorcist” film project anywhere on their pages or on databases like the IMDb. Their Twitter account yesterday was very active with re-tweeting reports about the Rachel Weisz-led “Dead Ringers” TV series, but made no mention of a new “Exorcist” or any of the reports.
The original film’s director William Friedkin has also responded to the talk on Twitter saying: “I have nothing to do with an Exorcist reboot and wouldn’t watch it if there was one.”
For now the project should be considered speculative rumor at best, despite numerous reports about this all tying back to that Deadline throwaway line.
