Ewan McGregor Talks Recording “Pinocchio”

In February came news that Ewan McGregor has joined filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming stop-motion animation version of “Pinocchio” at Netflix, one of many projects the filmmaker has long been attached to.

Of course that kind of film takes a long time to craft and so it wasn’t expected we’d hear much more about it for a while. Now, as part of a recent interview with ACE Comic-Con, McGregor has offered a surprise reveal.

It turns out not only will be playing the voice of the title character’s famed cohort Jiminy Cricket, but he had already done a good deal of work on the film even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit:

“That I had started working on before I left for New York. So some of that is recorded. And of course, it’s stop-frame animation, so it’s going to take them a great long time to make that film. But my first part of that, which is recording his dialogue, is sorta done. There may or may not be a song that needs to be recorded. I’m not sure I’m at liberty to discuss that.”

Ron Perlman, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and David Bradley are also starring in the film but McGregor is the first to reveal what role hs is playing. del Toro is also busy finishing work on his live-action noir tale “Nightmare Alley” which had to halt production due to the pandemic.
