Though it won Best Picture as the Academy Awards last night, the Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” also achieved something that hasn’t been done in the history of the Oscars before.
The film took home seven Oscars on Sunday night, making it the most-awarded best picture winner since “Slumdog Millionaire” took eight wins in 2008 – the last year the Best Picture winner was limited to five films.
Since that time, the awards have often been spread out across a number of films each year and a ‘sweep’ is something not really seen much these days.
That changed last night and whilst “All Quiet on the Western Front” dominated the tech categories – ‘Everything’ was the one to secure most of the ‘above the line’ categories with best picture, director, original screenplay, lead actress, supporting actress, supporting actor and editing.
No other film in 95 years has won seven above-the-line Oscars. In addition, it is only the third film in Oscar history to win three acting awards – the other two being “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Network”.
The film also generated one unexpected bit of excitement during its Best Picture win as Ke Huy Quan once again reunited with Harrison Ford on stage, the former “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” co-stars hugging wildly as members of the cast and crew came to the stage.
