Producer Lia Vollack has announced plans to turn Netflix’s 2020 feature film “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” into a Broadway stage musical.
Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Dan Stevens and Pierce Brosnan starred in the original film which follows aspiring Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir as they are given the chance to represent their country in the Eurovision song contest.
The movie featured multiple songs, including Oscar-nominated “Husavik (My Hometown)” written by Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus and Rickard Göransson. Molly Sanden performed the song (with McAdams miming).
Ferrell will write the book for the musical, alongside his co-writer on the film Harper Steele as well as “Beetlejuice” musical book writer Anthony King.
Ferrell says in a statement: “We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.”
Savan Kotecha, who was the executive music producer on the film, will have his music featured in the stage version. Alex Timbers will direct, but no word as yet when the show will premiere.
