Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” topped the box-office this weekend, pulling in $71 million which is just a tad shy of projections but not by much.
The result is behind other COVID-era starters “Black Widow” ($80.3 million), “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75.3 million) and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” ($90 million) but with this Marvel now has the top four openings of the pandemic era.
Internationally the film’s day-and-date global release in most markets certainly helped, the movie taking in a further $90.7 million internationally for a global total of around $162 million for its opening weekend – and that’s without key markets like China and Russia.
“Eternals” scored only 47% positive reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it a B CinemaScore. In both cases, those are the lowest scores to date for a Marvel Studios film.
“Dune” came in second with $7.6 million while “No Time to Die” was third with $6.2 million. The latter is arriving on PVOD this coming week, 31 days after its opening as opposed to the ‘new normal’ of 45 days. “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” was fourth with $4.5 million and “Ron’s Gone Wrong” was fifth with $3.6 million.
In limited release, NEON’s acclaimed and high-profile Princess Diana film “Spencer” opened to $2.1 million on just under 1,000 screens. That’s a poor screen average to start despite a healthy overall amount and demonstrates that attempts to blur the line between arthouse limited engagements and wide releases still isn’t a safe option for the moment.
