Denzel Washington’s third and final entry in “The Equalizer” franchise is reportedly on track for a strong Labor Day weekend opening at the start of next month.
Set to hit on Friday, September 1st – box-office projections have the Antoine Fuqua-directed movie on track to pull in at least $30 million over four days, with several sources suggesting a potential haul closer to $40 million.
The film, part of Washington’s only franchise film series, is reportedly attracting big interest from men over 25, but even women over 25 are also expressing interest.
In addition, there are no other wide releases over Labor Day weekend whilst the release schedule is cooling down to only one or so wide release a week through September starting with “Gran Turismo” next weekend (this weekend sees both “Blue Beetle” and “Strays” opening wide).
The new film sees Washington’s Robert McCall retired to Southern Italy, but he discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
The first “The Equalizer” debuted to a $34 million opening weekend in 2014, with the second taking in $36 million in 2018. Both films ended with just over $100 million domestically and a further $90 million internationally each – a worldwide haul of $190 million from budgets in the $60-70 million range.
