The Epic Games store crashed earlier today due to a rush crush of fans trying to get a free copy of Rockstar Games’ “Grand Theft Auto V”.
Even now, seven years after release, the open-world title remains a perennial best seller and a massive money spinner for Rockstar (with the help of GTA Online) and so rarely drops in price.
Even with the premium pricing, it has sold nearly 110 million copies as of the end of last year and is a big hit with the modding community who continue to improve the graphics with things like ‘NaturalVision Remastered’ and ray tracing to make the game borderline photorealistic at this point.
Epic Games announced in a tweet on Wednesday that, through May 21st, players can download the game for free via the company’s games-launcher app for PC or Mac. That tweet has since been deleted.
Earlier today, Epic Games acknowledged the technical problems with the digital store saying they are “currently experiencing high traffic” and are aware of slow loading times, 500 errors, and launcher crashes. They are apparently working on the problem.
