“Elvis,” “Black Phone” Target Solid Starts

Baz Luhrmanns Elvis To Hit Cannes
Warner Bros. Pictures

Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic “Elvis” is reportedly on track to collect $30 million from its domestic box office debut over the weekend according to pre-release projections.

Budgeted at a relatively pricey $85 million, that would be a strong start for an adult audience drama but the film will need some legs to justify its expense.

Likely to fair better on the economic front is Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” which looks ready to open to at least $15 million – nearly earning its $18 million budget back in its domestic debut alone.

How these numbers will hold up by the weekend isn’t clear. “Lightyear” famously was projected for a $70=75 million or so debut ahead of its release before coming in considerably lower with a $51 million first round.

That film is expected to drop to around $25 million this weekend and fourth place as “Elvis,” “Jurassic World Dominion,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” all fight it out for first place.
