Tesla and SpaceX CEO and controversial billionaire Elon Musk hosted NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” last night. Reviews were soft, THR summing up the reaction best as “more forgettable than controversial”.
Nonetheless, the episode pulled in the third-highest overnight ratings of the season with a 4.8 household and 2.7 rating in adults 18-49 – behind only the Chris Rock-hosted premiere and Dave Chappelle’s November episode.
While ratings were up, one thing that took a hit was Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Dogecoin’s price has accelerated dramatically in recent times. Just four weeks ago it was worth USD $0.06, rose to as high as $0.72 right before the broadcast, and then plummeted during and after the episode to $0.45. As of writing it has now stabilised back down at $0.56.
Musk also revealed he has Asperger syndrome during his opening monologue of the episode, a monologue that has been watched more than two million times in twelve hours in clip form released after the airing. A segment spoofing Mario Bros. and starring Musk as Wario is also faring well.
The episode marked the first time ever that the show was live-streamed on YouTube with the broadcast available in more than 100 countries.
