Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental” debuted to the second-worst domestic opening weekend for a Pixar film ever with $29.6 million. Combined with its poor Cannes debut and costly $200 million production budget, the film was quickly branded a costly flop.
Then, in one of the greatest box-office comeback stories since “The Greatest Showman,” the film’s fortunes have turned around. It hanged in there, with minimal drops between weekends and scoring solid word of mouth. Internationally in particular, the film has had strong legs in the two months since its release.
In fact, the movie has reportedly racked up $307.2 million overseas, surpassing the $305.9 million overseas haul of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and has turned it into the second highest-grossing animated film of 2023 in international markets.
To date, the film has managed to take in $454.3 million at the box office worldwide, $151 million of that being in North America. Domestically it has no chance of beating “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” which racked up $380.9 million, but its 5.11x multiplier (how many times its opening weekend haul it has earned) is seen as truly remarkable.
However, worldwide the film is being seen as potentially reaching $500 million – around 2.5 times its $200 million production budget. With its PVOD release in the U.S. this past weekend and future home video and ancillary revenue along with merchandising, it looks like it will end up profitable.
