Elba Says “Luther” Film “Is Happening”

British actor Idris Elba has once again indicated that a feature film version of his famed BBC TV crime drama series “Luther” isn’t just an idea any more – there’s some actual movement underway.

Neil Cross created the drama in 2010 which follows Elba as the titular detective investigating one or two cases over a handful of episodes each season. Occasionally Ruth Wilson would pop up as his psychopathic prodigy and twisted love interest Alice.

Whilst accepting a BAFTA honor on Friday, Elba spoke to the press and said:

“I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards – a film. And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening. With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines. And a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.”

Elba has won two Golden Globes and a Royal Television Society best actor award for his performance in the show, and these comments follow on from him teasing the possibility a few weeks ago during a Sky News interview.

Elba also indicates he would like to direct and write more, as well as act.
