Eddie Murphy Up For New “Pink Panther”

Netflix

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Eddie Murphy is reportedly circling a reboot of the “Pink Panther” comedy-mystery franchise in the works at MGM and Amazon.

The original film series was created for MGM by Blake Edwards and chronicled the investigations of the inept Inspector Jacques Clouseau, memorably played by Peter Sellers across six of the eleven films produced.

The nine original films in the series ran from 1964 through to 1993 with Sellers dying following his work on the sixth film “Revenge of the Pink Panther” in 1978. Steve Martin took on the character in two films in the mid-2000s. The first, second and fourth of the Edwards films (The Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, The Pink Panther Strikes Again) in the original Sellers line-up are widely considered comedy classics.

No other details have emerged regarding other actors or creatives involved, though Murphy is expected to take on the role of Clouseau – a role that requires a considerable amount of physical comedy skills.

Murphy most recently alongside Jonah Hill and Julia-Louis Dreyfus in Netflix’s “You People” and reprising his Prince Akeem role in “Coming 2 America”.

He’ll next be seen in Amazon holiday comedy “Candy Cane Lane” and has been shooting a fourth “Beverly Hills Cop” film titled “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” for Netflix. He was also recently attached to the heist comedy “The Package”.
