Eddie Murphy is in early talks to both produce and star as George Clinton, one of the godfathers of funk music alongside James Brown and Sly Stone, in an upcoming biopic about the man.
John Davis (“Dolemite Is My Name”) and Catherine Davis will produce the project which is currently sorting tying down the rights to Clinton’s life and work. Once set, they will hire writers and shop the project around.
The film aims to tell the story of Clinton’s humble beginnings in North Carolina in the 1940s to the formation of his groundbreaking bands Parliament and Funkadelic and his ultimate influence on legendary artists from Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg, to Ice Cube and Wu-Tang Clan.
Murphy has a three-picture deal with Amazon so they will probably get first dibs. Murphy next begins production on the Kenya Barris-directed Netflix comedy “You People” alongside Jonah Hill, and plans to follow that up with a fourth “Beverly Hills Cop”.
