Eastwood’s “Jewell” Joins The Awards Race

Once again, Clint Eastwood has popped up with a last-second release of one of his directorial efforts as Warner Bros. Pictures has given Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” a December 13th opening. That puts the film squarely in awards contention.

Paul Walter Hauser stars as the real-life security guard whose life turned chaotic after he was listed as a possible suspect in the Olympic Park bombing during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Jewell maintained his innocence throughout and was finally fully cleared by the FBI three months later – though his reputation and health were irreparably damaged. Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm also star while Billy Ray is writing the script.

Also potentially entering awards contention is Kristen Stewart, as Amazon Studios has given Benedict Andrews’ independent political thriller “Seberg” an awards season release date of December 13th.

Jack O’Connell, Anthony Mackie, Margaret Qualley, Colm Meaney, Zazie Beetz, Vince Vaughn, Stephen Root, and Yvan Attal are also star in the film about actress Jean Seberg (Stewart) who clashes with the FBI as it attempts to discredit her in retaliation for her support of the Black Panther Party.

Finally the re-teaming of “Captain Phillips” director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks in “News of the World” has been given a Christmas Day 2020 release by Universal Pictures, putting the Luke Davies-penned film in prime awards consideration.

Hanks plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a veteran of multiple wars who travels around the country telling the true stories of kings, queens, feuds, wars, and other newsworthy events. Five years after the Civil War, Kidd must return a lost ten-year-old girl (Helena Zengel) to her family – a girl raised by a Native American tribe for most of her life.
