Early “Lost Bus,” “Steve,” “Christy” Reviews

The Toronto Film Festival is currently underway with reviews pouring forth for the various world premiere films so far.

Reveiws for titles like “Roofman” and “Rental Family” should be forthcoming tomorrow, but ahead of that some major Fall film titles were screened yesterday and review aggregate scores are already up.

Perhaps the most interesting results so far are for Paul Greengrass’ “The Lost Bus” starring Matthew McConaughey. That film is so far charing at 100% from 12 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 66/100 on Metacritic from 7 reviews – suggesting its widely liked but not loved.

Reviews praise Greengrass’ direction, the pacing and style but don’t hold the script, characters or personal drama in as high esteem.

It’s fairing far better than the Sydney Sweeney-led boxer biopic “Christy”. That film is sitting at 65% from 17 reviews on RT, and a decidedly ordinary 58/100 on MC from 9 reviews. Sweeney’s performance is being praised, but the film around it – not so much.

Also making the grade today is the Cillian Murphy indie film “Steve” which is sitting a little better at 75% from 16 reviews on RT, and 73/100 on MC from 7 reviews. Criticisms are that it’s too melodramatic, but some seem really taken with the movie.

So far, and much like Venice this year, there’s been a decided lack of great films in the early days. Hopefully that will change tomorrow as numbers for “Wake Up Dead Man,” “Fuze,” “The Choral,” “Rental Family” and “Roofman” among others come in.
