E3 2022 Has Been Fully Cancelled

You can forget even a virtual E3 this year as the exhibition’s trade group, The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), has confirmed the event has been cancelled.

The event was previously shifted from an in-person to a virtual one due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19. Today they’ve confirmed there will be no digital E3 showcase in 2022.

An ESA rep said in a statement to Variety: “E3 will return in 2023 with a reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations.”

This marks the second time E3 was completely cancelled because of COVID, the first being in 2020. Last year an all-virtual event was held in the usual June window.

E3 itself, once arguably the most important date in the gaming calendar, has become notably less prominent and important in recent years as multiple major players opt out of the event in favor of producing their own.
