Powering ahead of expectations, the comedy-fantasy “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” pulled in a total of $15.3 million in its opening day at the box office and is set for a $40 million or more opening domestically for the weekend.
That’s on the high end of tracking and is seen as a very commendable debut for the film, with comparisons already being made to the “Uncharted” box-office performance last year. That film turned a $44 million opening weekend start into a $402 million worldwide total haul in the midst of the pandemic.
Unlike “Uncharted,” ‘Dungeons’ is being buoyed by excellent reviews from both critics and audiences, with the latter awarding it an A- CinemaScore. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film sits at 91% (7.4/10) with critics and 93% with audiences.
Helping it along was that Paramount pushed hard on the film, hosting numerous previews in cinemas around the globe last weekend and generating good word of mouth in the process.
The film is now looking set to easily clear “John Wick Chapter 4”, which is coming in a little under expectations in its second weekend. The Keanu Reeves-led film earned $7.85 million on Friday, and its three-day haul is targeting $28.3 million – a 62% drop from its initial bow.
