The throwback fantasy action-comedy “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” a very well-received adaptation of the famed role-playing game, rolled and won in its worldwide debut this weekend.
The Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez-led film took $38.5 million from North American theaters in its opening weekend – coming in line with the top end of expectations as opposed to beating them as overly rosy predictions indicated yesterday.
Internationally, the film collected another $33 million from 58 markets for a global tally of $71.5 million. Ticket sales are expected to remain strong in the coming weeks, which will help it earn back its costly $150 million production budget.
Onto the North American charts and “John Wick: Chapter 4” took second place with $28.2 million (down by 62%) in its second weekend and has so far generated $122.7 million in North America and $245 million globally. It’s on track to easily beat the third film’s franchise high gross of $328 million.
In third was “Scream VI” with a further $5.3 million. The film has hit a domestic total of $98.2 million and still climbing. It has already beaten its 2022 predecessor, which ended its run at $81 million. The low-budget faith-based film “His Only Son” opened in fourth place to $5.3 million.
“Creed III” rounded out the top five with $5 million. The sports drama has grossed $148 million domestically and $258 million worldwide to date – easily beating the $214 million total haul of “Creed II” to become the highest-grossing entry of the spinoff series. The film hitting PVOD platforms on Friday didn’t impact its performance this weekend.
Then there’s “Shazam: Fury of the Gods”. In its third weekend, the DC Comics adaptation slipped to sixth place with $4.7 million, down 49%, to a domestic total so far of just $53 million. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” fell to ninth and is pretty much done in cinemas with just $1.2 million for this weekend. Its domestic haul sits at just $212 million.
All of this comes ahead of Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which opens this Wednesday and is expected to dominate box-office charts over the Easter holiday with as much as $125 million over the five-day Wednesday-Sunday period.
