In early 2006 Glen Schofield wanted to make the most frightening horror game he could imagine – a blend of inspirations from “Resident Evil 4” and films like “Event Horizon” and “Solaris”.
The result was “Dead Space,” the acclaimed and beloved sci-fi horror game that broke ground in various ways from its minimalistic HUD to its famed sound design and score, and the game’s art design.
Schofield went on to found Sledgehammer Games and has been doing duty on “Call of Duty” for years. More recently he started up Striking Distance Studios, with their first effort being “The Callisto Protocol” which unleashes this coming week.
Dubbed a spiritual successor to “Dead Space,” which itself is getting a full-fledged remake in January, the game stars Josh Duhamel (“Transformers,” “Las Vegas”) as a 24th-century contract freight transporter ferrying cargo between Europa and a prison on Callisto.
On a lucrative final run, a terrorist group boards and the ship crash-lands on Callisto’s surface. The transporter and the terrorist leader (The Boys’ Karen Fukuhara) find themselves locked up in the prison, which is overrun by hostile inmates afflicted with an unknown disease. Sam Witwer also stars.
Ahead of the game’s release, Duhamel has gone past just his CG performance and stars in a live-action TV spot for the game. Both a 45-second green band and a 102-second red band trailer have been crafted and can be seen below.
“The Callisto Protocol” releases on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC on December 2nd.
