Those who remember Leos Carax’s “Holy Motors” will remember the movie effectively halts for several great musical interludes from a wild accordion street number to an emotional song of lament from Kylie Minogue.
Carax finally returns to screens with “Annette,” his new film which sees him teaming with long time experimental band Sparks. Sparks originally conceived the project as an album until they worked with Carax to turn it into a film.
As a result, the entire film’s original soundtrack is composed by the band, with the cast providing additional voices. Even Carax himself, creating his first work in English with this film, contributed to the lyrics of this almost entirely sung film.
Today the single “So May We Start” has arrived and features Sparks alongside the film’s stars Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and Simon Helberg.
Co-written by Ron and Russell Mael, “Annette” sees Driver playing a stand-up comedian who falls in love with internationally famous opera soprano Ann (Cotillard) in contemporary Los Angeles. Their life is forever changed when their daughter, Annette, is born with a mysterious gift.
The Cannes Film Festival will feature “Annette” as the opening movie this year on July 6th.
