HBO’s premiere of its “Game of Thrones” prequel spin-off “House of the Dragon” pulled in a record-setting audience on Sunday night.

The series, set two centuries before its predecessor, drew 9.986 million viewers across all platforms in the United States – the biggest series premiere in HBO’s history.

The premiere was the best series launch to date on HBO Max in the United States, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

It also delivered the largest single-night audience for HBO since the series finale of its parent show in May 2019. Typically, Sunday night viewership for an HBO series will represent just 20-40% of the show’s total gross audience so expect viewership to rise in coming weeks.

The official stats follow on from those issued by Samba TV, which measures a sampling of 3 million terrestrial TVs (100x larger than Nielsen’s household footprint) and reported that the series lured 2.6 million viewers across its sampling of viewers.
