Don’t Expect “Shang Chi 2” Until 2026

Marvel

Already out there promoting the “Barbie” movie, actor Simu Liu has offered an update on where things stand with the sequel to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” which was released in September 2021.

At the time, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the studio already had plans for a sequel. However, when the Phase 5 & early Phase 6 announcements came, there was no sign of the film.

In addition, the film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton had been set to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”, which at the time was in the works for a May 2025 release, and is also working on the “Wonder Man” TV series.

One rumor that cropped up claimed a February 14th 2025 premiere, a slot “Blade” has now taken.

When asked about the status of the sequel on new social media platform Threads, actor Simu Liu confirmed that he was told that the sequel would come after an “Avengers” movie but added that the film keeps being delayed due to various factors:

“[I] was told it would follow Avengers but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control :( Hope to have more concrete news to share soon.”

Marvel’s shifting release schedule makes dates hard to lock down. The fifth “Avengers” is currently set for release on May 1st 2026 but the studio also has three unannounced films set for that year – February 13th, July 24th and November 6th.

In addition, whilst their 2024 slate is settled and locked, their late 2025 slate is barren and could squeeze in another film. The first “Shang Chi” has come up in conversation again lately due to its cost-effectiveness by Marvel standards (around $150 million) and being one of the best-reviewed entries in Phase 4 (beaten only by “Spider-Man: No Way Home”).
