Don’t Expect More Chris Guest Mockumentaries

Warner Bros. Pictures

Actor Eugene Levy says he recently reunited with the cast of 2003’s “A Mighty Wind” to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the feature.

The mockumentary comedy feature followed a folk music reunion concert in which three folk bands reunite for a television performance for the first time in a decade.

It marked the third of five comedy features directed by Christopher Guest done in that same style, preceded by acclaimed titles “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show” and followed by the less well-regarded “For You Consideration” and “Mascots”.

Levy co-starred in all but the latter film and in a new interview with The Guardian to promote his Apple TV+ travelogue series “The Reluctant Traveler,” he says the Chris Guest fake doco film series is likely done:

“Our last one was For Your Consideration back in 2006. Our fake documentaries – Chris [Guest] always hated the term ‘mockumentary’ because we’re not mocking, it’s more affectionate than that – but they were getting a little cookie-cutter in terms of story.

Everything was kind of the same, except we just changed the subject. At a certain point, that becomes predictable. In the interim, so many television shows have picked up that form and just destroyed it.”

“Best in Show” was financially the most successful of the group, pulling in $20 million off a budget half of that, though ‘Wind’ was arguably the most profitable making $18 million from a $6 million budget.

The entire eight-episode run of Levy’s “The Reluctant Traveler” is now up on the Apple TV+ service.
