It’s not clear when most TV and film production will resume filming, but when they do what will it look like? According to a new report, Warner Bros. Television presidents Susan Rovner and Brett Paul say that there will be a lot of fundamental changes to how things are done.
Participating in a conference call with showrunners, executive producers, line producers and personnel from key production companies, the executives reportedly spoke about what might change as productions begin to ramp up.
With productions likely to begin well before a COVID-19 vaccine is available, close contact during scenes – especially in terms of sex scenes and stunt work – will be minimised where possible. Rovner says: “We believe we’re going to need a plan for limited physical contact between actors, [and] intimate scenes may need to be reimagined or even reconceived.”
Large-scale stunts that don’t involve physical contact will likely be okay, but stunts involving actors and doubles being within close proximity, especially “hand to hand, face to face, requiring physical contact” style stunts will probably have to be written out. So don’t expect much in the way of melee fights.
In addition, there are logistical issues such as air travel and shooting in foreign countries that will have to be planned for with some actors unlikely to be comfortable flying much so lavish world-traversing series are also out. This suggests that the likes of cancelled shows such as “Sense8” with all its global location shoots and psychic pansexual orgies, or “Daredevil” with all its complicated close-quarter fighting, will not be seen again for a long time.
