The quality of the “Star Wars” films have long been debated. However, when it comes to the economics of them there has been only one outright failure – “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.
Burdened by a massive $275 million budget due to all the retooling, the film ultimately grossed just $393 million worldwide – a far cry from the recent ‘Skywalker’ saga films and the first spin-off “Rogue One” which all made over a billion dollars each.
Reviews for “Solo” were pretty decent, but the film’s failure has forced to Disney to rethink its entire strategy with the franchise and has seemingly shot down any chance of Alden Ehrenreich reprising the Han Solo role in the future.
Even so, there’s still been the occasional talk by fans of a possible sequel, even if only for Disney+, but the first film’s co-writer Jon Kasdan has shot down that possibility. He recently tweeted:
“Don’t think anyone’s pursuing a Solo sequel at the moment. I think a feature, at this point, would be a tough sell & the D+ Star Wars slate is really…pretty packed, all shows I’m looking forward to. My work on Indy 5 is long over but I’m excited there’s forward movement.”
Kasdan also said later that turning a potential sequel into a TV series would also be hard to push for. The first film ended with Han and Chewbacca heading to Tatooine for a job involving Jabba the Hutt so any follow-up has an obvious story thread to pick up.
