A new report at The DisInsider indicates that Disney’s proposed live-action “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” remake has been scrapped.
The Mouse House is showing no signs of slowing down on the live-action remakes of its classic cartoon features with new films based on “Snow White,” “Moana,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Hercules,” “Bambi,” and “The Princess and the Frog” and “Tangled” on the way – not to mention a definite prequel to “The Lion King,” and a possible sequel to “Cruella”.
Another project that was on the list was a remake of the 1996 “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” animated feature based on the Victor Hugo novel. A while back, famed playwright and scribe David Henry Hwang was brought on board to pen an adaptation.
In March, Josh Gad was said to be circling the film’s lead, Quasimodo and posted a social media update saying: “The script is one of the best I’ve ever read .”
Then in May this year, composer Alan Menken suggested that progress had halted on the film and wasn’t certain it would ever happen due to the subject matter and real-world issues tied to it.
Now the outlet clarifies this is still just a rumor even though they’ve obtained the information from multiple sources. They say that now that Bob Iger is back in charge at Disney, it is “highly unlikely” the film will move forward as “Iger is not the biggest fan of ‘Hunchback'” and a remake isn’t on “their list of priorities” right now.
Disney already released two live-action adaptations this year with the Disney+ debut of “Peter Pan and Wendy” and the theatrical release of “The Little Mermaid”.
