Disney Is Finished With Big Acquisitions

They bought Pixar, then Marvel, then Lucasfilm, and then much of 20th Century Fox. Now though, Disney’s current CEO Bob Chapek says his company is done with big-scale network and studio acquisitions

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal Tech Live 2022 conference on Wednesday, Chapek says the plan is apparently for all of Disney’s media in the near future to be made within the entities they already own:

“We have the best creative teams, the best brands and franchises in the world. We’re quite happy to have the output level across our channels without having to be a buyer in the open marketplace… Our plan is to have all our content creation self-contained.”

Chapek also addressed criticism his company had become “too woke,” saying the Mouse House’s programming will cater to an audience which isn’t just one demographic:

“The world is a rich, diverse place, and we want our content to reflect that. that’s good from a commercial standpoint as well, because you appeal to the largest possible base. We want Disney to stand for bringing people together.”

Chapek says Disney intends to hold on to ESPN, and that he believes Disney+ will be one of the must-have services as: “This is a critical-mass business. Scale is really, really important to be able to thrive.”
