The Walt Disney Company has reportedly created a task force to study artificial intelligence and how the technology can be applied across the entire entertainment conglomerate according to Reuters.

Launched earlier this year, prior to the Hollywood writers’ strike, the group aims to develop A.I. applications in-house and form partnerships with startups.

Disney reportedly has eleven current job openings seeking candidates with expertise in artificial intelligence or machine learning for various sectors of the company.

The news comes as Hollywood writers and actors are currently on strike with one of the points of contention involving the industry’s exploitation of the technology. A.I. is being seen as a larger threat to the job security of actor’s and writers in an industry already famous for not being the most stable source of income.

The job offerings stretch across Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney-branded television and their advertising team – the latter aiming to build a “next-generation” AI-powered ad system.

The aim is to find practical applications for the technology and potentially curb the soaring costs of movie and television production, especially the former as massive box office returns are more difficult to come by in the post-pandemic era.
