Twenty-five years since it became a global box office smash in 1997, iconic British comedy “The Full Monty” is getting an official sequel in the form of an eight-episode limited series for Hulu and the Disney+ service internationally.
Developed by Searchlight and FX, the film’s lead cast are all set to return including Robert Carlyle as Gaz, Mark Addy as Dave, Lesley Sharp as Jean, Hugo Speer as Guy, Paul Barber as Horse, Steve Huison as Lomper, Wim Snape as Nathan and Tom Wilkinson as Gerald.
They will be joined by a new cast of children and grandchildren of the returning characters. Also onboard is the original’s Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and producer Uberto Pasolini (“Nowhere Special”), whilst Andrew Chaplin and Catherine Morshead take over as directors.
In the series, the original group return to navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors. The series will explore the brighter, sillier and more humane way forward where communal effort can still triumph over adversity.
The original followed a group of unemployed steel workers turned amateur strippers. Costing just $3.5 million to make, the movie ended up grossing more than $250 million globally, scored multiple Oscar nominations, and is still considered one of the best British films made.
Currently filming in the UK, the series will premiere on the Star section of Disney+ globally, Star+ in Latin America and Hulu in the United States.
