While the “Star Trek” franchise has always touted a central message of diversity, it wasn’t really until the more recent “Star Trek: Discovery” that it finally added some LGBT characters into the cast list.
Now, ahead of the show’s return in October with its third season, CBS All Access has officially announced the addition of the franchise’s first-ever non-binary and transgender characters.
Blu del Barrio will play the role of a non-binary character named Adira. Intelligent and with a confidence and self-assurance well beyond their years, Adira will find a new home on the USS Discovery while also expected to form an unexpected bond with Stamets and Dr. Culber.
Meanwhile Ian Alexander is set to portray the role of an empathetic, and warm transgender character named Gray who is eager to fulfil his lifelong dream of being a Trill Host.
The third season is set to premiere on October 15th.
