Director Talks “Star Trek: SNW” S3 Production

Even before the second season went to air, Paramount+ had already greenlit a third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”.

Now that the second season is over, and ending on a tense cliffhanger, fans are eager to learn what happened to Captain Pike and the Enterprise crew.

Pre-production had been underway on a third season for months, and filming was set to begin in July. Then came the actor’s strike, which immediately put a big dent in all those plans.

In a new interview with TrekMovie’s All Access podcast, producer/director Chris Fisher confirmed that the series was literally just one day away from starting filming again before the strike led to the plug being pulled:

“I was going to direct the premiere episode… I had storyboarded pretty much the entire first episode. That’s how close we were to starting shooting. We were one day away from flying the actors in. We were like, ‘Do we fly the actors in?’ That’s when it went above my pay scale.”

Fischer adds that those on the production who are not on strike are still at work, preparing for when the third season can begin shooting again:

“Myself and the producers up in Toronto, we kind of say, okay [the strikes end] at the end of this month, what would happen?” Fisher explained. “What would we need to do to then get going? And then once the strike passes that, then we set it for the next month. We’re not that many weeks away from being able to start, absent all the other conflicts, which may have arisen by now.”

Fisher also says the new season will take even more chances than the second did with its ‘Lower Decks’ crossover and musical episode, adding that the “show is terrifying to make” which he finds actually “the best thing about the job” because it keeps challenging the team.
