“Dial of Destiny” Holiday Box-Office Is In

Following box office expectations being lowered after a disappointing three-day haul, James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is on course to fall in line with those new estimates for a five-day July 4th holiday weekend haul of between $80-85 million.

The Harrison Ford-led finale took in $11.8 million on Monday, raising its domestic total to $71 million. Whilst a five-day haul in the $80 million range sounds healthy, the film’s gargantuan production budget of $295 million has become a major sticking point.

Even though this is the final entry in the franchise, going out on these terms is not ideal and won’t be helped by a rush of competition in coming weeks with “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” and more crowding up the marketplace.

Disney also is set to claim third for the five-day holiday, with Pixar’s “Elemental” taking $3 million on Monday and bringing its domestic total to $92 million. It is also a film where its costly $200 million production budget has become a serious issue for it.

Not the case with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” which added $3 million on Monday and is already up to $343 million in North America alone and will shortly pass Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” at $355 million to become the second highest-grossing domestic film release this year.

“No Hard Feelings” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” will round out the top five for the five-day, with both taking in a little under $2 million each yesterday.
