“Dexter” Revival To Fix Finale’s Issues

The other week came the news that Showtime was reviving its Michael C. Hall-led drama series “Dexter” with a limited series from original showrunner Clyde Phillips.

The news comes seven years since the show went off the air following eight seasons and a widely panned finale in which Dexter Morgan effectively departs Miami and is now hiding out as a lumberjack. Both Phillips and Hall have previously discussed their dissatisfaction with the ending.

This week, in an interview with THR and Uproxx, Phillips confirmed the revival will pick up right after the eighth season ending and act as a “second finale” that will supposedly “make [things] right”:

“This isn’t Dexter season nine… This was an opportunity to write a second finale for the show.

We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream. What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years. Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage.

In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very gracious about that.”

The new limited series is set to begin production early next year to air sometime this Fall.
