In a surprise turn, Showtime has reversed a renewal order for its “Dexter” prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” with the show now effectively cancelled.
Showtime announced a second season renewal order back in April, six weeks after the series following a young Dexter Morgan (played by Patrick Gibson) ended its ten-episode first season run.
The series, however, has been on hiatus since the first season wrapped, and no start date for shooting a second season was ever scheduled – meaning no real costs were spent on the next run.
In the wake of Paramount’s merger with Skydance, the “Dexter” franchise has left Showtime in favour of the new Paramount Television Studios.
As a result, the decision has come to focus on “Dexter: Resurrection”, which continues the present-day Dexter (Michael C. Hall) story, and to now consider ‘Original Sin’ a one-off. A writer’s room for season two of ‘Resurrection’ will begin work shortly with the aim of getting a renewal.
“Dexter: Resurrection” hasn’t been officially renewed at this point, but it has been performing well with last week’s episode drawing the show’s largest audience of the season.
