Actor Johnny Depp suits up as an eccentric fez-wearing shopkeeper in a nearly five-minute launch trailer for the new MMO game “Sea of Dawn” from Chinese gaming company Changyou.
The short film, marking Depp’s first released screen work since his high-profile trial surrounding his defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard, sees him playing Phillip the Shopkeeper who confronts a hapless bill collector (Francisco Rodriguez) and regales him with tales of his adventures.
The nautical-themed multiplayer role-playing game is set in the 16th century amid the Age of Exploration and uses Unreal Engine. Players take on rival vessels, trade with other merchants, and delve into distant cultures, mysteries and mythologies.
The game is launching first in China on mobile and PC platforms, with a rollout in the U.S. and Europe slated for later this year. David Gil helms the clip which was filmed late last year in the Dominican Republic.
