In a controversial move that’s going to cause a lot of chatter, actor Johnny Depp’s newest film “Jeanne du Barry” is set to open the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16th.
Maïwenn helms the film directed by Maïwenn who herself as the title character alongside Depp, Benjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory and India Hair.
The story follows Jeanne Vaubernier, a young working-class woman hungry for more and uses her intelligence and allure to climb the rungs of the social ladder.
She becomes a favorite of King Louis XV (Depp) who is unaware of her status as a courtesan. He soon regains an appetite for life through her and the pair fall in love.
Against all etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles where her arrival scandalizes the court. Along with giving the Cannes opening night slot to the film, this will mark the first Cannes opener to be funded by Saudi Arabia.
Needless to say many column inches will be written about the movie, which will be released in French cinemas simultaneously with its Cannes debut.
the film will premiere just over a year after the end of the very public trial between exes Depp and Amber Heard which made international headlines.
