“Demon Slayer” Breaks Japanese Record

The animated feature “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” has surpassed Miyazaki’s famed “Spirited Away” to become the biggest-ever box office hit in Japan.

The story follows a boy living in the remote countryside in early 20th century Japan who goes on a mission of revenge after family members are killed by demons, and his younger sister becomes one.

The film, an adaptation of the celebrated Gotoke Koyohara manga, opened October 16th. It has earned $313.7 million U.S. dollars as of Christmas – pushing past the $305 million “Spirited Away” grossed from both its original 2001 run and revival screenings earlier this year.

“Demon Slayer” passed the $100 million milestone in just ten days, and a total of 24 million have seen the film across 379 screens it is playing on in the country.
