Thursday previews of “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” took in just $750,000 in previews on Thursday. As a result, projections for the horror film are now tracking for an underwhelming $7-9 million domestic start.
Thus the $45 million-budgeted movie, which scored poor reviews, will likely have to rely on international coin to steer into profit. The film has been retitled the less poetic “Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter” in overseas markets.
‘Demeter’ takes one of the most famous chapters of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula” and adapts it into its own feature story. It follows a 19th-century Russian merchant ship chartered to transport fifty unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London – contents unknown to the crew.
Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. Corey Hawkins, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Aisling Franciosi, Jon Jon Briones and Javier Botet star.
Much like “The Meg,” whose sequel hit cinemas last week, the film was in development for many years and underwent several different incarnations before we got what was on screen.
Andre Ovredal helms the film, which aims to do better than that other Dracula film this year, “Renfield,” which grossed just $26 million globally.
