Oscar winner Guillermo Del Toro unveiled his very long in the works “Frankenstein” film at the Venice Film Festival this evening – and it was a smash hit.
The title scored a 15-minute ovation, one of the best of the fest so far, and is playing in competition much like his 2017 film “The Shape of Water” which won the Golden Lion at Venice before going on to nab the Best Picture Oscar.
It’s a long film, reportedly clocking in at 2.5 hours, and critics reviews are a bit more mixed than expected. With 22 reviews counted it sits at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and at 73/100 on Metacritic.
There’s plenty of praise for the opulent visuals, but it’s also said to be very operatic and bombastic in scale which may turn off some. There’s a real mix of scores too with some 5/5, some 4/5 and quite a few 3/5’s.
Oscar Isaac stars as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature (Jacob Elordi) to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz co-star in the film which will hit cinemas October 17th and then Netflix on November 7th.
