DeBlois To Helm A New “Treasure Island”

Universal Pictures and Mandeville Films are in development on a new feature take of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel “Treasure Island” with Dean DeBlois (“How to Train Your Dragon”) set to direct.

The story follows young Jim Hawkins who is torn between his loyalty to his benefactors and his affection for Pirate Captain Long John Silver as they seek a buried pirate treasure.

The story has been adapted numerous times for film and TV in live-action and animated films, the most notable recent take was Starz’ adult-aimed prequel series “Black Sails”.

Evan Spiliotopoulos (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Wonder”) will write the script and collaborate with DeBlois on the story. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman will produce.

The project is expected to be DeBlois’ second live-action feature following the upcoming “Micronauts” adaptation at Paramount and Hasbro. That film has been given a June 4th 2021 release date.
